The Writers’ Exchange is a literacy program for at-risk youth in Vancouver, providing a safe space building reading and writing skills and literacy enthusiasm for kids and teens. As a long-time participant, I was asked to join the team as a youth leader. I help children with work, facilitate activities, provide special attention to kids with diverse needs, bonding and building relationships. As a teen leader the past three years, I’ve found joy in helping children grow!

Another year Writers Exchange school year completed. Even after three years, my gratitude and love for these kids grow! As a teen leader my heart never stops growing, my knowledge is ever expanding for the funny jokes and figet toys! I learn something new everytime I come to work. It could be about a new Pokémon or hearing a quiet kid talk for the first time, I’m in awe everytime. Every year I hear the kids vocabulary expand, they get better at writing, learn new jokes, quirks, hobbies and personality grow! I have the honor of being apart of their literary growth! I’m grateful to be apart of exploading kittens game, monopoly deal, donuts make me go nuts, Rick Ross jokes, handing out snacks, cleaning your tables after a very messy snack day, debating who should betray who for a game. The list goes on and on! Working at writers exchange after attending the program from grade 4-11 has taught me the importance of a learning, social and loving support system for students is important for their growth! The adoration I have for these beautiful kids surpasses anything I would’ve thought beforehand. Hearing them call my name! Making the same jokes, etc… I could do it forever.
